The specular highlights come on like oncoming headlights through a rain-streaked windshield — bright, dreamlike, scattered front and center, while the out-of-focus branches and leaves drift behind them into shadow. It’s a July morning, but the light behaves like something remembered rather than seen.
Below, the foreground reads like a charcoal drawing — traces of shadow pulling the eye left, then right, then back again, never quite settling.
Shot wide open with the old 55mm PC-Nikkor, the scene overwhelms — light everywhere, structure nowhere, the canopy dissolving into the ground it should be shading. Most of this series lives here, out of focus by intention, chasing the feeling of that morning rather than its detail.
That old lens is more versatile than it has any right to be, and still, after all these years, a lot of fun to wander with.
